In pursuit of exploring the Gestalt principles, a 5x50’ foldable was designed, composed of 5x5’ blocks each filled with both a letter and a number ultimately spelling out TYPOGRAPHY and moving down a 1-10 scale. Testing boundaries, or perhaps the lack thereof, of the figure-ground relationship and being restricted to black and white only demanded unconventional methods be taken. With the choice to emphasize the continuity principle, I sought my blacks and whites to flow into and out of each other seamlessly, to manipulate letterforms and number orientations for more engaging visuals, and overlaying or merging two elements in certain areas to create what appears to be a single letterform.
